About this video: Bluelight is a popular term in the media right now with new brands of blue light blocking glasses coming out every week. But do blue light glasses really work? Can blue light hurt your eyes? In this video, Joseph J. Allen, OD FAAO reviews the current science and theories about blue light & blue light glasses. Bluelight has been found to affect our sleep cycles by reducing and delaying melatonin releases. Melatonin is a hormone that helps regulate our sleep cycles.

  1. Eye Health QOTD: Do you wear Blue light glasses? Do they help you at all with your sleep patterns or eye fatigue?

  2. I’ve seen someone actually prove this with real physics.
Specifically, they used a spectrometer and placed an ideal blackbody source (an incandescent bulb). The data showed that blue-light blocking glasses significantly reduced radiation from 410 nm downward.
410 nm is a shade of blue very close to violet and ultraviolet.

However, the problem becomes clear when we point it at an RGB screen. In particular, the “blue” component of an RGB display is a very narrow band peaking around 450 nm, much farther from 410 nm , yet the spectrometer still showed the screen brightness (all the 3 RGB) being reduced a little.

I think this overall dimming is the reason people report less eye strain.
As for blue light, the issue is that screens emit near 450 nm, which has nothing to do with the 410 nm range. That’s why the advertising is very misleading.

This makes sense, because if the glasses really blocked the screen’s blue light, everything would appear yellowish.

  3. Blue light glasses have been a game changer for me, I regularly had eye strain (average 5x a week) from working *a lot* on a computer and headaches associated with them. After a year with blue light glasses I can count how many times I have had eye strain on one hand.
